Kabul (BNA) Afghan journalist, writer and recent Fulbright scholar Habib Zahori has been told he can stay in Canada.
After six weeks in Wolfville, Zahori had his asylum hearing scheduled in Toronto late last week and his case was approved. In fact, he said, the hearing lasted for only 15 to 20 minutes and the decision was announced on the spot.
Zahori is in Toronto waiting to receive the court confirmation in writing from the Canadian government. “Next steps for me,” he says, “will be applying for a work permit, health card and driving licence, and most important of all, my permanent resident card.” Zahori said he wanted to thank those he encountered in Wolfville “for the help and support. I hope I get the chance to repay your generosity, kindness and support one day.” After he completed the post-graduate degree in international relations, which brought him to Denver, Zahori was not allowed to remain in the United States and his life would have been in danger had he returned to Afghanistan because of his work with the American media covering the war in Afghanistan. He is hard at work on a novel, and recently had a short story published online.
