Violence Against Women Increasing: MoWA

Saturday November 21, 2015

Kabul (BNA) Expressing concern on deterioration of women situations and violence against them, the authorities of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs (MoWA) said that based on assessments of this ministry, in the first six months of current solar year of (1394), 850 cases of violence have been registered while last year it was 746 cases for the same period. These cases included 36 murders, 21 suicide, 23 sexual abuse, 390 beating, 47 divorce and 36 compulsory marriages. Talking to media, chairwomen of MoWA Law Department, Aziza Adalat Kha said, “The real data of violence against women is more than the data reached to MoWA. Most women and families conceal violence’s due to social reasons and restrictions”. According to her, to reduce violence against women, the MoWA organized legal trainings and literacy courses to women that would immune women from violence with aware of their rights and improving of their awareness. Traditional society, old values, the culture of immunity, shortages in our legal-judicial system and law level of women awareness of their rights are among other reasons behind violence against women.
A number of people particularly women are concerned on cases of violence that due to them women are victimized. Sharifa Rasooli a lecturer at the Alberoni University, talking on recent increasing violence against women said, “Videos of violence against women and young girls released by media. Our girls afraid of them and asked us why women and girls are stoned in this way, their limbs are cut or are burnt”. He said, “Those both man and women who are accused, should be prosecuted by legal and official government courts and women or girls must not be married forcefully due to unacceptable traditions. It they refuse marriage why they should be stoned which is frankly against Islamic and humanitarian principles.
She asked the Afghan government to adopt essential measures for safety of women life. If the government fails and let oppressors and powerful individuals to make violence against women and girls like Farkhunda and Rukhshana, the Afghan women would no longer tolerate this tuition. Strongly criticizing the civil society, women and human rights bodies, she said that they must not make easy judgment and should convince the government to prevent terror against this nation particularly women and harsh incidents should no longer be repeated against women who are mother, sister and spouse. She went on to say that burning, stoning, cutting of body limbs forceful marriage, hanging and tens other cases are among violence for which the Afghan women have always been victimized. Stoning of 17 years old Rokhshana in Ghor by merciless Taliban who lost life under stones, made thousands families mournful. Beside these reasons, non-approval of law on no violation against women by the parliament is another reason of increase of violence against women. Approval of this this law could be a strong legal support of human rights and plays important role in decrease of violence against women. Kohistani
