Emergency Status Announced in Herat Due to Flash Floods

Kabul (BNA) Officials from western Herat province on Thursday said that different parts of the province witnessed heavy flash floods following rainfalls which led to closure of the Herat-Torghandi Highway to traffic and left financial losses to the residents.
Herat governor’s spokesman Jailani Farhad told media flash floods have created serious challenges for the people in vulnerable areas and that the local government has announced emergency status.
Farhad said two children were killed and a man was wounded as ceilings of two houses were collapsed due to heavy rains and floods.  He said some other houses were destroyed, but no one has been hurt in those incidents.
According to Farhad, Herat governor Abdul Qayum Rahimi is leading an assistance operation to possible victims of floods.  He said the governor has ordered the teams on the ground, security forces, and health centers to be ready for any possible incident.
The Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) said that flash floods are threatening the lives of people in different parts of Herat province and that they are ready for help in case of any big incident.
Officials said transportation departments have been ordered to be in alert in case people from some areas needed to be evacuated.
